A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with Wednesday’s fatal shooting of a Lakewood High School student in St. Petersburg.

  • Muennich died at a St. Petersburg hospital

According to police, the 17-year-old was taken into custody at his home early Thursday morning. He was charged with first-degree murder and taken to the Pinellas County Juvenile Assessment Center.

Bay News 9 is not releasing the suspect’s name unless he is charged as an adult, per our crime guidelines.

On Wednesday, Maxwell Curtis Muennich was shot during an altercation in front of his home in the 2100 block of 1st Street South. Muennich turned 18 Wednesday.

According to police, the initial report was that this incident was a drive-by shooting; however, detectives were quickly able to establish that this was not a drive-by shooting.

Muennich was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg Hospital, where he died at 9:30 p.m.
