Pasco detention deputy who slapped inmate arrested, fired
PASCO COUNTY —
A Pasco Sheriff’s Office detention deputy was arrested Tuesday morning and later fired, a day after jail surveillance video caught her slapping an inmate at the Land O’ Lakes jail.
- Detention deputy fired, charged with misdemeanor battery
- She was seen on surveillance video slapping inmate
Cpl. Leann Hindman, 47, was charged with battery by a secure facility employee on a confined person and was released after paying a $250 bond.
In surveillance video, Hindman is seen handcuffing an inmate at the Land O’ Lakes jail. Sheriff Chris Nocco said Hindman got rough. In the video, Hindman throws a chair across the room, sits the inmate down and slaps her across the face.
“You have an inmate who’s in cuffs, can’t defend herself and it just seems like emotions got the better of this former deputy,” Nocco said.
Investigative reports said the inmate threw water at the deputy, and that’s when Hindman put her in handcuffs.
Hindman said the inmate pinched her, and that’s why she slapped her. But the sheriff said the surveillance video shows otherwise.
“The nice thing about those cameras in the jail is that it really wasn’t much of a defense,” Nocco said. “You clearly see this inmate was in handcuffs, and she just took a big swing at her.”
Another detention deputy who witnessed the incident reported it. Hindman had worked at the Sheriff’s Office since 1995.
