Pasco-Hernando State College softball player struck and killed by car in Hudson
A softball player at Pasco-Hernando State College was killed Monday night while jogging on a Pasco County sidewalk.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Brooke Ashlee Gonzalez, 19, of Citra, was killed as she jogged on a sidewalk along State Road 52 and was struck by a vehicle.
Teammate Sabria Bruton can’t believe it.
“Just goes to prove that life is short. You got to make the best of it while you can. You never know when it’s your time,” she said.
Troopers said the crash happened at 10:05 p.m. when Scott Thomas Yutzy Jr., 22, lost control of his 1999 Ford Escort, went onto the sidewalk and struck Gonzalez.
The Escort then hit a guardrail before finally stopping in an outside lane of State Road 52 near Chenwood Avenue.
Gonzalez died at the scene. She was an honor student and was graduating next week. Head coach Tom Ryan says Gonzalez is leaving a huge hole behind.
“You are talking about somebody who was tremendously loved at the college,” he said. “Someone who was just an exceptional person.”
The team is traveling next week for the playoffs without Gonzalez. The plan is to win it all for number 18.
“I could care less about what anybody else has to say. We are taking it for ‘Gonzo,’” Bruton said.
“I think we are all in this together and we are just going to play and do the best we can for Brooke,” Ryan said.
Teammates say Gonzalez was thinking about joining the military after school and becoming a nurse.
Yutzy, from Lakeland, suffered minor injuries. The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed as of yet.
