Man arrested in Wilmington on attempted rape charge
A man claiming to be an Uber driver called 911 just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday and said he had picked up a half-dressed woman asking for help.
WILMINGTON – A man was arrested early Saturday after allegedly attempting to rape a woman.
Cameron Emerson Raybourne, 18, was arrested near the intersection of Third and Dock streets and he was charged with second-degree rape and consuming alcohol under the age of 19, according to New Hanover County jail records.
A man claiming to be an Uber driver called 911 just before 1:30 a.m. Saturday and said he had picked up a half-dressed woman asking for help and was following Raybourne in his car.
The driver later held Raybourne until mounted police officers arrived as the woman directed authorities to their location.
“He saved me from getting raped by this guy,” the woman said about the Uber driver through tears. “He saved me.”
The woman told dispatchers she had met Raybourne while out Friday night.
According to the incident report, the alleged attempted rape happened in an alley in the 200 block of Market Street.
The woman was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Raybourne was given an $80,000 bail and was released from jail just before noon Saturday.
